They’re getting ready to tie the golf damn knot in front of family and friends this weekend. The pair have been friends for years, but friendship turned to romance two years ago.
Money will be no object for this successful golfer, whose wedding will take place at Ashford Castle in Co. Mayo, Ireland, on Saturday. Maybe the guests will have tee offs with millionaires shortbread. Love will be on par with this couple. But Caroline Wozniacki was the proverbial bogey in all of this, too many months and years to the whole in one of marriage. Roar sure kicked W to the curb. Bye, bye, birdie. Rory pulled out of that engagement just aft…er the wedding invitations had been sent out. At the time he thought that he was too immature for marriage. The harsh reality was that she was not the right lady for him to spend a life with. There is no easy way to say “I don’t love you anymore.” Caroline Wozniacki reportedly retorted. ” Who would have guessed that golf was created by MEN – a birdie, a bogey, an eagle? How sexist and misogynistic ! Tennis is for gentlefolk!” Okay, okay I am jesting. Don’t cha know many songs have been written on this subject like “strangers can’t be lovers anymore” and even Bolton’s “How can we be lovers if we can’t be friends?” I think he wanted someone to stay a little in the background. Erica flew in one morning, literally to his room and told him that he was late for a golf game and the eagle had landed. Two under par ! And an American eagle, to boot ! Their friendship blossomed into romance.
The engagement took place in Paris in 2015 after the tragic terrorist attacks which
The Northern Irish golfer said: ‘We had planned the trip in May but we were unsure whether to go after what happened. So we decided to go and if we didn’t like it, or the mood of the place, we were going to go somewhere else.
‘But when we got there, it just felt great. There were security checks as you went into the shops but people were just getting on with things. So we felt comfortable, and I thought if I proposed at the start of the trip it might make it even better. So we went out for dinner and that was that.’
Speaking about his relationship with his American fiancée, he added: ‘I know you’ve seen Erica around tournaments a lot but we really have tried to keep it low key.
The ceremony and reception is expected to cost over £200,000, a mere drop in the bucket of Rory’s fortune. Celebrities attending will be One Direction’s Niall Horan, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and actor Jamie Dornan. The guest list looks to be 160 people in all. Stevie Wonder is going to be playing as well at the wedding. I just golfed to say I love you. And I mean it from the bottom of this Northern Irish heart.
And the Northern Irish are very superstitious. I am half Northern Irish so I am as well. There’s this old wives tale wedding poem. It talks about auspicious and not so auspicious months to be wed.
Married when March winds shrill and roar,
Your home will lie on a distant shore.
Married ‘neath April’s changeful skies,
A chequered path before you lies.
Married when bees o’er May-blossoms flit,
Strangers around your board will sit.
Married in month of roses- June-
Life will be one long honeymoon.
Ups and downs….but isn’t that’s all what golf (life’s) about?
